The Commonwealth takes note of women’s vunerability to the AIDS epidemic

Dr Sylvia  Anie, Director of the Social Transformation Programmes Division of the Commonwealth, discussed the condition of women in the Commonwealth whilst addressing the 2011 UN High-Level Meeting on AIDS in  New York.

Dr. Anie discussed the marginalisation of women in the development process, and how the issue of AIDS impacts women in the Commonwealth, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa where women make up 60% of the AIDS-affected population.

She said the Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality therefore recognised “not only the need to put women at the centre of the development agenda but also at the heart of the global health agenda”.
